Except the recent announcement of The Chita single grain official release on the European market, Suntory hadn't yet revealed anything new in 2017. But the year is saved thanks to the release of a 18 year old limited edition of the famous Yamazaki Mizunara single malt.

A 2017 limited edition bottling of Yamazaki aged for at least 18 years, although utilising some stocks as sold as 50 years. Aged exclusively in Mizunara oak, a wood type indigenous to Japan and notoriously difficult to work with, this single malt is one of the hardest to find Suntory products. The wooden presentation box is also made from recycled Suntory casks.

Of the casks ageing quietly in Suntory's cellars, Mizunara casks are the rarest, numbering only a few among thousands. Those whiskies aged over 18 years within the legendary casks are the more precious. Yamazaki's blenders have carefully selected only the finest whiskies from this prized collection, and through their unparalleled craftsmanship have created the Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition. Some of the whiskies used to create this masterpiece are in excess of 50 years, with the youngest being 18 years of age.

Distilleries like Bainbridge and Chichibu in Japan are experimenting with smaller casks and different production methods to extract the most from mizunara. Distillers also search for faster, easier ways to use the wood. In the meantime, the best plan is to look to top distilleries known for their well-aged mizunara expressions.

SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Fans of Japanese whisky had better move fast. Suntory Whisky has just launched the Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition in Singapore. There is no word on how many bottles there are in Singapore, but there are only 5,000 bottles available worldwide.

For the Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition, Mr Fukuyo, 56, tasted a few hundred Mizunara whiskies and made selections with varying ages, from 18 years old and beyond. A very small portion exceed even 50 years of maturation (which Mr Fukuyo describes as having a very spicy Oriental note), which give this limited edition an incomparable depth and a flavor that lingers long after the liquid has passed the lips. Age is the key to unlocking the signature taste of Mizunara whisky. 041b061a72
